Gum Contouring and Rejuvenation

Creating a natural beautiful smile involves the gums as much as the teeth. Often this is ignored by dentists and results in a compromised aesthetic result. Dr See evaluates the gums and offers advanced techniques to improve the heights, symmetry and shapes.

With advanced surgical training he can grow the gums back from recession or remove excess gum tissue in 'gummy' smiles.

Gum Contouring and Regrowth

Gum contouring and regrowth are techniques used us to raise or lower the heights of the gum tissue covering the teeth. The goal is to create overall symmetry and harmony in the smile.

There are several situations where gum recontouring or regrowth may be used:

  • A 'gummy' smile

  • The front teeth appear short and length has to be added. The length cannot be added to the biting edges because it is not in harmony with the face so it needs to be added at the gum line of the tooth

  • The gum levels are asymmetrical.

  • Rejuvenating gum tissue by adding tissue back in areas of gum recession.

  • Sensitive teeth from gum recession.

Gum Rejuvenation

Gum grafting or soft tissue grafting is used when the teeth appear too long. This is often caused by a condition called gingival (gum) recession. This happens when the gum line recedes and exposes the root surfaces. These root surfaces are darker than the crown of the tooth, which results in an unaesthetic appearance. These surfaces can also become sensitive to thermal changes such as drinking cold water.

The most effective way to treat this is grafting new gum tissue over the exposed root surfaces. This not only dramatically improves the appearance of the smile, but promotes long term gum health too. See below some examples of gum recession that have been grafted by Dr See using best practice techniques.

We were able to achieve gum regrowth through connective tissue graft using the Gold Standard in soft tissue grafting - the patients own tissue from the palate.

Correcting the gum recession by Soft tissue grafting not only restores the natural gum line improving aesthetics but also resolves sensitivity issues, contributing to overall oral health.
